Day three

Well I was both happy and disappointed with last nights efforts. Firstly you self settled in three minutes which was phenomenal and you slept all the way till 3.30 before waking so I was super happy about that. But, 3.30 till 4.45 was hard work. First I tried just staying in the room and shushing you. Then we tried leaving you for a bit. It was in and out for over an hour with hands on, hands off techniques and patting but eventually me and the nurse both agreed that you were a determined little fella and we could carry on like that all night and risk having you grumpy and out of sorts or I could feed you and try and squeeze in another hour. So I fed you and you easily fell back asleep for another.

So we were up bright and breezy at 6am after your early morning snack you weren't that hungry for breakfast so we pottered about a bit and went for a little stroll before returning for your morning sleep.

After leaving the room there were the usual angry protests and after 5 minutes it didn't seem as though you were calming down so I re entered the room. Laid you down shushed you and told you to go to sleep and left. A couple more minutes of angry cries until you were almost quiet but we all heard you talking to yourself, firstly almost laughing then jabbering then almost humming. I know when you reach this stage you are almost there so we left you a few more minutes and then silence! You were asleep! Hurrah. So 15 minutes this morning and you self settled.  Only a short sleep this morning of 45 minutes so hopefully you can sleep a bit longer this afternoon...

The midwifes have all agreed you are such a busy little boy that it takes you a bit longer to calm down so we need to take extra measures to get you there before we put you to bed so this afternoon I carried you in arms around the gardens and sang to you whilst we looked at the plants and listened to the birds and we did this for 10 minutes before a quick story and off to bed. First five minutes were very angry and cross cries so I came back to the room laid you down and shushed you before leaving the room. After leaving you for a short time I still didn't think you were calming down but when i poked my head in the room you were still lying down so I knew you weren't far from sleep. After some more verbal direction to lie down and sleep I left. I was expecting uproar but after two angry shouts there was complete silence. I waited.... And waited expecting you to start up but again you have self settled... So we are making some great progress as normally you never go to sleep without me in the room.

If I could push your 4am sleep back to 5am then I'd be perfectly happy - I guess with daylight saving starting on Sunday maybe we will be able to achieve that goal.

Here's hoping for a rested afternoon and good nights sleep!

It's been a strange afternoon, you had a good hour and a half sleep but you woke up on the wrong side of bed I think. It was all fine when daddy and Sienna came to visit and we took you to the park and ran around but as soon as we got back you were miserable. You didn't eat any dinner and we're basically miserable so I decided to put you to bed early. You had a nice warm bath which you pooed in, quick story and then off to bed. Cuddles, kisses and straight into bed. You barely even protested and you was asleep in 2 mins. I hope this doesn't mean we're in for a rough night though!!! You and your two little friends have done so well. You all self settled to sleep in under 10 minutes tonight. Eloise has slept through both nights, Alexis slept through last night so tonight is your turn... One can only hope!

Round Two

Well last night went pretty well all things considered - we tried to put you all to bed at roughly the same time. There was lots of screaming and yelling I was surprised any of you managed to sleep but eventually you all gave in. I left the room gave it a few minutes and had to return and do some shushing and patting of the mattress but after a few minutes you were asleep.

Apparently you woke shortly after midnight but after a few whinges you were back asleep. It can't have been that serious as I didn't even hear you! At 2.30 we had a bad wake up - after more shushing and patting of the mattress you were asleep in 10 minutes. However, you didn't stay asleep after 10 minutes you were awake again so I stood outside your room and prayed! Alas my prayers were not answered. Time to intervene... Tried the shushing and mattress patting again but you were having none of it. In the end I resorted to patting your back to sleep which I know works (a last resort but the midwives said to take it easy on you with this being your first night). So I tried stopping the patting sooner but you quickly cottoned on to that and wasn't very happy about it either. So I left the room for 30 second intervals in between patting you to see if you appreciated me actually being there?! Eventually at 3.45 you have in and went back to sleep. So, one small step was that last night we eliminated your 4am feed. You slept right through to 5.30 and I think you may have even gone longer but sadly it was like a domino effect the first baby woke at 5.15 and woke our neighbour who in turn woke you. But you were very smiley on waking and didn't even seem hungry so I think you are purely breastfeeding for comfort rather than need at 4am.

 Round 2 - or day 2
This meant you were much hungrier for breakfast which was great. We have also moved your bottle feeds much closer to when you have your meals so that you completely dis-associate milk with sleep.

I was surprised that even after a big breakfast you still managed a whole bottle of milk - 210mls which you never normally have. So on to your morning. You were very busy and active showing no signs of being tired even though you had been awake for 4 1/2 hours. So, I gave it a shot anyway. A few quick cuddles a kiss and into bed you went and out the door I went. 9.55am in bed 10.05am asleep!! You self settled completely, what a champion, and you are still asleep after an hour. Only problem now is that the doctor is here and as part of the routine you have to see a doctor to make sure you are fit and healthy enough to complete the program. So shock horror I am going to have to wake you...

You still managed to have an hours sleep this morning even though you were a bit cranky about being woken. After our check up with the paediatrician, some lunch and a few hours more play it was right back to business. I think the only fail we had was that I was trying to get you to sleep to early as I had a class to attend. Well, we gave it our best shot after quick cuddles you were down in the cot and mummy was out the door. Lots of yelling and protest and you wouldn't calm till I was in the room. Took about 25 mins of me in and out the room until finally you gave in and let me just shush and talk to you from the door. Another 1.5 hour nap so you managed to transition through sleep cycles without waking!

This evening was a whole different story. After your bath you were clearly getting tired at 6.30 so after a bottle, quick story and cuddle I put you straight to bed. After 3 mins of whimpering you were asleep. I have everything crossed that you will do well tonight!!!

Sleep school

Day 1 - Monday

We arrived nice and early and you have charmed all the nurses here with your lovely blue eyes and cheeky smiles. Your first nap at 10am we settled you in nice and gently after putting you down in the cot and leaving the room you were pretty unhappy so I had to stay in the room whilst you fell asleep, just shushing you. Sadly you only slept for 30 mins and after several unsuccessful attempts to resettle you we got you up and out of the cot. So, our plan for the week is to cut out your 4am morning feed, and try and get you self settling and sleeping better. Your afternoon sleep I laid you down to sleep at 2.20 gave you a kiss and left the room. You clearly weren't happy about it but you didn't scream for too long. You chatted away angrily and cried a little but after 5 minutes you were almost quiet. Sadly we are stuck next door to a screamer so could prove interesting for the week ahead. So, there was a further 5 minutes of whimpering before finally silence. You slept for one sleep cycle (roughly 45 minutes) and then I had to gently pat you for a few minutes until you were sound asleep again for another 40 minutes. When you woke up at 4 we went for a lovely stroll to the shops.

There are 4 babies in this unit so we will see whether you all keep each other awake. Currently you are all sound asleep....

Bedtime

Battle 2 commences... We started out well after kisses and cuddles I laid you down in the cot and for a minute of two it didn't sound like you were going to protest at all. Your cries went up and down and petered out until finally you ramped things up so I laid you down and shushed you a few times and in 5 minutes you were asleep... Or so I thought - I left the room and you were quiet for about 5 minutes and then another baby was trying to go to sleep and we had to start all over again. After leaving you for 10 minutes I laid you back down and gently patted the mattress instead of you, until finally after 5 minutes you gave in.... Let's see what awaits us the rest of the night!

Ain't no stopping you now

Sienna made me do your hair curly the other day. Your reaction was priceless!
Well it's been about 3 weeks since you took your first steps and now you are walking everywhere like a little drunk zombie. Hands up in the air and waddling along. It's actually very cute. Yesterday you even figured out how to get from kneeling on the floor to standing.

We have another tooth on the way which makes 4 in the last 3 weeks!!! Urgggghhhh which has made for a terrible few weeks sleep at night. Although now you are taking much longer naps in the day... Wish I could sleep when you sleep. Still, next week is our week stay at Tresillian and I'm hoping they can fix you!

You still always have one eye on your sister to see what she is doing. Sometimes it is a bit of a love hate relationship. Most of the time she loves you and makes you laugh and then other times she is giving you sly little jabs when she thinks no one is watching or picking you up and dragging you around like a dolly.

We went for a lovely swim the other day. I think you will be a water baby too as you loved splashing around with your sister.

Now that you are walking you love to explore the house and when I turn my back you have often disappeared into another room to explore. You especially love it in the kitchen where you can pull out all the things from the kitchen cupboards.

Just one more month till your birthday ! I can hardly believe you are nearly one. You are such and incredibly happy smiley little boy. I love your cheeky coy little smiles xxx

One small step for man...

So little fella it's been a big few weeks for you. In the last few days you have taken your first steps. It started on Sunday with just a step or two and today you are walking half way across the room! We are so proud of you, your gorgeous little face is so determined as you waddle, sway and then fall backwards on your bottom. Just like your sister you are walking at 10 months!! You really are smashing through your milestones. At first you needed prompting but now you just start walking all by yourself!

You really are such a smiley happy boy during the day... Whenever we are out and about everyone wants to smile and talk to you and you aren't shy about flashing the smiles around. If only we could convert this to night time as well!

We have 3 weeks left now until our Tresillian stay, we have been back to the day stay clinic now a few times and this week she said what you are doing during the day is almost perfect... Now we just need to fix you at night. Tresillian lady reckons that, to do this I should be cutting out all your night time feeds so, I think when we go to Tresillian it is time to get tough. She's convinced that you will then be sleeping through the night... Me, I'm not so sure 😕. But I am determined to try and make this work!
You're still a little guy for your age - barley gaining 50g this week but you are still tracking near the 30th percentile so I'm not too worried. You absolutely love your food now. Especially finger food although it's daddy's worst nightmare as you are at the stage where everything goes in comes back out, looked at, spread through your hair, examined again before finally popping it back in your mouth to eat.
Sam and Kelly sent you and Sienna lovely pirate costumes to dress up in. Sienna loved hers - you were a bit bemused.
